A little about Wells Cathedral…
Wells Cathedral lies in the heart of the smallest city in England. An Anglican cathedral dedicated to St Andrew and is the earliest English cathedral to be built in Gothic style. It’s magnificent West Front, which was completed in the mid-thirteenth century, has one of the most impressive collections of medieval sculptures in the western world. Statues of Christ, and The Virgin Mary, accompanied by the Apostles and representations of the Resurrection, are an arresting sight for visitors as they approach.
The sculpture, is on loan to Wells for a period of 18-months from 26th August 2021. There are events coinciding with the sculptures arrival include a prize draw for the original lithograph gifted by Anthony Gormley and a series of art talks.
A statement from Anthony Gormley on DOUBT…
”I am very aware of the paradox of placing an object called DOUBT on the facade of a building devoted to belief, but it seems to me that doubting, interrogating, questioning, are all part of belief. For me doubt can be a positive force and the imaginative engine of future possibility”.
